Bet Tracking: Bringing Live Betting Into the Live Game Broadcast

FDSN bet tracking.png
Business Need

FanDuel Sports Network (FDSN) needs a way to deepen user engagement and retention during live games by better connecting what users are watching with the bets they’ve placed on FanDuel Sportsbook.

Currently, betting and viewing live sports exist as two disconnected experiences, even though they are owned by the same ecosystem.

The business opportunity is to close the loop between content consumption and wagering activity, making live sports viewing more personal, immersive, and habit-forming.

Problem to Solve

Users who place bets on FanDuel Sportsbook have no visibility into their active bets while watching games on FDSN.

As a result:

  • Users must leave the viewing experience to check bet status

  • They rely on memory or separate apps to track outcomes

  • Live moments lack personalized context

  • Engagement drops between plays, periods, or games

This creates unnecessary friction and weakens the emotional connection between the game and the user.

Scope of Ownership

I owned the the end to end creation of the bet tracking feature on mobile app and tv platforms. Defined the end-to-end bet tracking experience for linked users, from account linking entry points to real-time bet status surfaced during live games. Designed and prototyped mobile-first UI patterns for active vs. settled bets, contextual in-player moments, and real-time state changes.

Launching the MVP

Since this feature was first of its kind in our product and it was a partnership release with FanDuel Sportsbook. The focus was to lauch on our most used platforms - app and TV.

Discovery for App

In our current product we have a partnership with EaseLive they are a provider of real time sports stats and they appear as overlays when intitated by the user. From a holistic point of view we will use this as an entry point for the bet tracking feature to avoid confusion and introducing new a design paradigm for the user.

Wireframes

Building off the current EaseLive experience there were two options we could use to introduce the bet tracking feature.

Squeezeback Option - when EaseLive intitializes upon selecting the 'Bet Tracking' icon the video player when squeezback to display all the bet tracking information on the right hand side.

Topbar Option - This option would present the bet tracking cards on top of the video player.

Refinement

For our team cadence we tend to do an internal design critique and then sync with the product team of the possible solution options. Below is how i structure the presentations in figma nothing formally polished because we want feedback and its intentional so the product team feels comfortable and does not focus on visuals rather than on the UX side first.

The Pivot - From App to TV

One of the challenges of this project was around the ambiguity of the features and which platform will be released first. Amazon was also launching their own bet tracking feature in partnership with FanDuel Sportsbook. About a week and half into the project we were informed by our CPO we'd need to focus on TV since Amazon was planning to release that feature of that platform first and Fanduel wanted that experiecne to be fluid in our product as well.

Discovery for TV

On TV for users to gain access to their bets they needed to link their accounts to FanDuel Sportsbook first. When users select the betting icon they are shown the empty state with a QR code that upon scanning, pushes them to authenticate and connect their sportsbook.

The flow below illustrates a users journey from code scan on TV to being redirected to web for authentication and after success their TV device is refreshed into the signed-in state.

Visual Exploration

After discussions with product and engineeering team once the UX and backend flows is agreed upon we then turn to exploration high fidelity visual design.

Below is a set of explorations around the bet card with content as follows:

  • team logo

  • team colors

  • player name (testing longest player names)

  • bet status

  • bet name + description

Handoff Documentation

We tend to have one meeting where we get visual feedback from the product and engineering teams. Once this is finalised, we move to documentation handoff.

The documentation includes:

- Key screens per platform

- Key flows per platform

- Prototype (if needed) per platform

Within each section we include clear writeups of the intention and the behavior of accompanying feature designed.

Results

Below is a prototype of the final designs showing the complete flow of a user accessing the bet tracking feature and moving through to link their account to FanDuel Sportsbook and showing their active bets.
